[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text]The<\/span> increase<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> number<\/span> of<\/span> hikers<\/span> on<\/span> the<\/span> Fishermen\u2019s<\/span> Trail<\/span> and<\/span> an<\/span> apparent<\/span> change<\/span> in <\/span>their<\/span> profile<\/span><\/a> have<\/span> brought<\/span> new<\/span> challenges<\/span> to <\/span>the<\/span> territory<\/span>. <\/span>Litter<\/span> left<\/span> behind<\/span> by<\/span> walkers<\/span> has<\/span> risen<\/span> exponentially<\/span> \u2014 <\/span>mainly<\/span> toilet<\/span> paper<\/span> and<\/span> wet<\/span> wipes<\/span> \u2014 <\/span>contaminating<\/span> the<\/span> landscape<\/span> and<\/span> degrading<\/span> the<\/span> fragile<\/span> ecosystems<\/span> that<\/span> make<\/span> up<\/span> the<\/span> natural <\/span>heritage<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> southwest<\/span> coast<\/span>. For Rota Vicentina, <\/span>this<\/span> phenomenon<\/span> calls<\/span> for <\/span>an<\/span> urgent<\/span>, <\/span>coordinated<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span> multi-pronged<\/span> response. <\/span>An<\/span> awareness<\/span> and<\/span> alert<\/span> campaign<\/span> is<\/span> underway<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Following a trend already observed in other parts of the world, the Fishermen\u2019s Trail has, over the past two years, experienced a sharp increase in litter along the route.<\/span><\/p>\n

This has become a recurring issue raised by trail users and one that, according to Sara Serr\u00e3o, President of the Rota Vicentina Association, stems from various factors: \u201cThere are more people travelling, more interest in experiences, more exposure on social media, and greater visibility for Rota Vicentina \u2014 particularly the Fishermen\u2019s Trail, which exerts an irresistible fascination for travelers from Central and Northern Europe and even other regions of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not all. Another trend has also been identified \u2014 that of day-trip excursions, with large groups coming to walk for just one day. In this quick consumption of \u201cstar stages\u201d of the Rota, many visitors \u201cnot only don\u2019t realize they are in a protected area \u2014 the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park (PNSACV) \u2014 but are also unaware of the natural values that exist here and must be preserved,\u201d she adds. <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image media=”27976″][\/vc_single_image][vc_column_text]This raises several questions, both practical \u2014 \u201chow to deal with this, how to prevent it, how to solve it\u201d \u2014 and reputational.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn thirteen years of Rota Vicentina, we\u2019ve never reached this point,\u201d stresses Sara Serr\u00e3o, who believes this issue has the potential to compromise \u201cthe goodwill and positive reputation that Rota Vicentina has worked hard to build.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Along with it, all the efforts made for the region in terms of \u201csustainable nature tourism development, reduction of seasonality, creation of business and investment opportunities, and population retention in a territory once considered depopulated.\u201d [\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading]<\/p>\n

A multimodal campaign<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text]So where to start? For the President of Rota Vicentina, there is a great deal of work to be done in terms of community engagement and environmental communication about what can and cannot be done in a protected area.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the awareness and litter collection activities carried out throughout the year with volunteers, Rota Vicentina is finalizing an informative and awareness campaign about litter on the trails, which will include a range of materials and formats:<\/span><\/p>\n

– An appealing and educational leaflet<\/b>
\n encouraging hikers to carry and collect their waste, available in six languages (German, Spanish, French, English, Italian, and Portuguese), to be distributed widely among members, walkers, operators, international fairs, and the general public;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

– A digital map <\/b>
\nmarking and locating existing public toilets and water points along the trail;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

– Strategic signage<\/b> along the Fishermen\u2019s Trail encouraging waste collection, to be placed near tourist bus stops, caravan clusters, and main walking access points;<\/span><\/p>\n

– An online awareness campaign<\/b>
\nacross all Rota Vicentina communication channels, including the blog and social media.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is the beginning of a long road ahead \u2014 one where there is \u201chuge room for the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), as the managing authority of the Natural Park, to take on a more active and engaged role,\u201d says Serr\u00e3o, expressing \u201cgreat expectations\u201d for the newly approved Co-management Plan of the Natural Park. Threatened ecosystems<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text]What impact does litter left behind by hikers have on such a unique territory as the one traversed by the Fishermen\u2019s Trail?<\/span><\/p>\n

The uniqueness of the southwest coast goes far beyond its landscapes. This is one of the richest regions in Portugal in terms of flora, as biologist Andr\u00e9 Carapeto, founder of the<\/span> Flora-On <\/b><\/a>portal and one of the country\u2019s leading voices in botany and environmental issues, reminds us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Carapeto is clear: \u201cThe southwest coast is one of the most special areas for flora in Portugal.\u201d Here, he explains, we find about one-third of the entire flora of mainland Portugal \u2014 around 1,100 identified plant species, nearly 50 of which are endemic to the region, meaning they exist nowhere else.
\n<\/span>These species germinate on the cliffs, particularly in the older dunes that form behind them.<\/span><\/p>\n

And because they are extremely well adapted to sandy soils with low organic matter, they are the first to suffer the impact of litter, trampling, and human waste, which alter the soil\u2019s composition and make it more suitable for generalist species.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re talking about habitats that are sometimes so tiny or so degraded that only a small patch remains, losing their competitive advantage as the soil becomes colonized by species that can grow by roadsides, in cities, forests, or abandoned fields,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n

Restoring dunes and saving seeds<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text]The visible litter along the Fishermen\u2019s Trail is only the most obvious symptom of a broader problem of human pressure on the dunes \u2014 one that also involves trampling, illegal crossings to the beaches, invasive species, and the impact of agricultural activity on these ecosystems, among other factors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Understanding the scale of what\u2019s happening is crucial to act effectively on the ground. That\u2019s exactly what <\/span>Mossy Earth\u00a0<\/a><\/b>, Rota Vicentina\u2019s partner organization, is doing through the Dune Restoration Project<\/b><\/span>, which will initially begin with two pilot sites: Alteirinhos and Foz dos Ouri\u00e7os.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal is to map not only the pressures affecting these areas but also the habitats and key species that exist there. We\u2019ll be using drones <\/span>camera traps<\/i>, and bioacoustic devices to record bird sounds, for example,\u201d explains Francisco de Sousa, project coordinator, with Rota Vicentina as a partner.
\n<\/span><\/span>The aim is to carry out a systematic survey of the entire coastal stretch between Malh\u00e3o and Odeceixe, identifying priority areas for intervention \u2014 whether to combat invasive species (such as acacias and ice plants) or to consolidate and define the trails.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project also includes, in the long term, collecting seeds of dune species for nursery propagation. \u201cWe\u2019ll conduct trials to learn how to propagate these species and create a <\/span>stock <\/i>of plants sourced from these areas so that, after interventions, they can be replanted \u2014 reducing erosion risks and increasing competition against invasive species,\u201d he concludes. <\/span>
